Introduction to Microbial Biotechnology - ENVE 304
This course provides a broad introduction to microbiology and its applications in biotechnology, with a focus on environmental and industrial processes. Students explore the structure, nutrition, growth, metabolism, and genetics of microorganisms, as well as methods used to control microbial growth.
Topics include the history and scope of microbiology, cell structure and function, microbial diversity, viruses, wastewater treatment, food production, bioleaching, and soil bioremediation. Practical sessions introduce basic microbiological techniques through the examination of water, soil, and air samples, helping students connect theoretical concepts with laboratory observations.
